What a Cute Card (Reader X Kankri)

You need to hurry and open your locker. You managed to open it in your tired stupor and to your surprise you noticed something fly down and out of it to the floor. You looked down to see what it was.

It seemed to be a birthday card. It was pretty cute, you smiled going down to get a closer look at it. It was a cute sweater shaped card. It was red with wavy sleeves. It was adorable, you picked it up looking at it with a smile. It seems someone had remembered your birthday today. Not a usual occurrence, you smiled and held it tight. You needed to hurry before study hall began.

You grab you bag and pull out what you don’t need. You grabbed what you actually needed and quickly hurried with you bag slung over your shoulder and the card and a few books in your hand.

You made you way to the library, study hall was just extra time at the beginning of school, lets idiots study and finish their homework, and smartasses time to do extra credit. You weren’t perfect for either group so you just go to the library so you can read and double check your homework while you chat with friends. The main point of it was to let the late bus kids get time so they won’t be late to class. Pretty smart with that in your opinion.

You found an empty table and sat down sinking comfortably into the seat. You took one of your books and slide it between you and the table, you skillfully slipped the sweater card into the book so no one would see you reading it.

You smiled at the card one last time and cracked it open. You easily recognized the handwriting. It was clear, looked cleaver and had an obvious cork that you know all too well to let it go unnoticed. You admired the thought of the gesture fondly, you knew the person that gave you the card and hugged it to your chest with the book still hiding it.

Wow, that is pretty funny coming from Kankri. He’s usually so serious but he tried, its nice to see he tried to make you smile. You smiled wide and tried to hold back a chuckle. But his tag of meeting him was a bit odd.

Usually if he needed you he’d just find you here but he’s asking you to meet him privately, well not exactly private it’s just the hallway, but still. You shrugged and slipped the card in one of your books and gathered everything else. You got up and walked out into the hall and turned your head left and right.

You spotted a familiar red sweater and smiled. It was Kankri, at least he didn’t leave due to your delay. Of course it wouldn’t be like Kankri to skip anything. You walked over as he advanced, you smiled at him.

“It's good to see you Kankri, thanks for the card. Not many remember so thanks.” You said smiling.

He smiled back at you calmly, “It’s n9 pr96lem ____. I wanted y9u t9 have a happy wrigg-” You cut him off before he could finish. You placed a hand to his mouth and told him to shush.

“Don’t say it out loud Kankri, I don’t want strangers fussing or anything. I just want to keep calm today.” You said pulling your hand back.

“Alright ____. I understand if it triggers y9u 6ut that was very triggering 9f y9u t9 just cut me 9ff like that 9ver s9mething s9 simple. 6ut if y9u’d like t9 have a calm day that s9mewhat interferes with my plans t9 cele6rate with y9u.” He seemed to be pouting, you raised an eyebrow at the end confused.

“You, made plans to celebrate with me?” You never would have expected Kankri to make plans for something like this let alone with you.

“Yes, if it d9esn’t trigger y9u I’d still like t9 g9 thr9ugh with them. Just let me take y9u s9mewhere after sch99l. H9pefully y9u w9n’t 6e 9ffended 9r such. Trigger warning: restaurants, discussi9ns, questi9ns, p9tential c9nfessi9ns.” You again raised an eyebrow but nodded.

The bell rang and you both waved bye to each other as you dismissed your discussion and made your ways down the hall. Both of you made your ways to your respective classes trying to hold back a somewhat nervous smile.

You went through the rest of you day as you expected, avoiding idiots from punching you, smiling at teachers and getting homework. You did however try to ask Kankri what he planned, he wouldn’t budge and your neutral friends didn’t know what his plans were either. His own brother said he wouldn’t tell you, something about Kankri making a promise to avoid lectures.

It was after school and you made your way threw the busy halls in attempts to find Kankri. You scattered around through the halls near his last period class. You saw his red sweater and quickly made your way over. You did however manage to act casual once around him.

Around Kankri you always felt the need to compose yourself and not act the fool. You would get nervous but swallow your fear, you would hold down your occasional blush, and somehow still act natural. Most of your close friends would tease saying it was your subconscious telling you not to mess up so you can have a chance with him. You’d always blush and try to strangle your friends when they made that comment.

“Hell9 ____, I see y9u t99k the time t9 find me as I asked. I w9uld like t9 c9nfirm if y9u plan t9 all9w me the pleaser 9f f9ll9wing thr9ugh with my plans t9 celebrate this day with y9u. If s9 it w9uld 6e 6est that we take this time t9 gather 9ur things and leave.” He was so formal, you couldn’t say anything since you feared it wouldn’t seem correct, you just nodded you head.

You both hurried to your lockers getting your things and walked out of the school. Kankri lead the way looping his arm with yours making you blush. You tried to hold it back but had little luck. He just smiled and brought you to a small pleasant restaurant. It wasn’t formal and it wasn’t run down, you liked it. You easily picked your meal and Kankri already knew what he wanted.

While the two of you waited you listened to Kankri go about talking about why he chose this cozy place to bring you. You always listened to Kankri talk, you loved hearing him talk, he made so much sense even if it wasn’t a necessary explanation. You would listen while watching his soft looking lips move with their smart words leaving the cave of his mouth. You smiled as he continued and saw he had finished his explanation. You nodded taking in the new information gladly.

“Y9u kn9w ____, y9ur 9ne 9f the few pe9ple that I kn9w that actually listne t9 me. I really like that a69ut y9u.” He was smiling which made you blush, you loved his smile.

“I like hearing your lectures, they make sense.” You said smiling back.

“It’s 6ecause 9f that kind and 9pen qualities 9f y9urs that I really enj9y y9ur c9mpany. I d9 have s9mething I’d rather n9t keep a secret fr9m y9u any l9nger ____. I just d9n’t think I sh9uld and really w9uld feel great hate in myself if I d9n’t admit it.” His voice dropped a bit, you were rather curious with what he had to say now more than ever.

“Y9u see ____, y9ur such a friendly pers9n and y9u have the m9st 9pen mind. Y9u take time in kn9wing what things are a69ut, y9u can act rapidly 6ut have already kn9wn what the 9utc9me was g9ing t9 6e. Y9u als9 have such a zesty attitude t9wards m9st everything y9u d9 and I really admire that a69ut y9u. Y9ur presence makes me feel s9 welc9med and I can’t help 6ut feel warm fr9m inside with the feelings y9u trigger me t9 have. I think it’s time I st9p hiding h9w I truly feel a69ut y9u, I tried hinting at it with the card 6ut I understand if y9u didn’t view it that way.” Kankri took a breath looking at you with a blush on his face. You had your head tilted not sure you were listening to him correctly considering what you assume he’s getting at. “I feel flushed f9r y9u ____. I have f9r s9 l9ng and I d9n’t think I sh9uld hide it fr9m y9u any l9nger. I th9ught it might 6e a g99d idea t9 tell y9u n9w 6ut n9w I’m just feeling rather nerv9us a69ut having decided that.” He rubbed the back of his head, blush masking his face.

You smiled at him and chuckled at his shyness, did he really think you’d turn him down? That’s assuming the impossible to happen. You got up from your chair confusing him. You walked around the table and hugged him tight. Your own blush was clear but you didn’t care, he felt the same as you did around him. Sure you would refuse that you loved him when your friends asked but that was just because you thought they’d tell him.

He hugged you back but worried since you were yet to speak in reply to him. You hugged him tighter and laid your chin on his shoulder.

“I can’t say that I’m flushed for you Kankri…” You whispered in his ear, he shuddered. Did you just turn him down?

You pulled back from the hug and looked him in the eye with a smile on your face. You leaned in and kissed him softly confusing him to no end. You broke for a small bit of air and kneeled down next to him.

“Flushed alone isn’t enough. To be flushed is just to pity in a non-platonic way. I love you, human love includes not only the emotions and commitment to flushed romances but even more than the four Quadrants can hold. I’ve loved you for a long time, I felt drawn to you, a need to be with you. To protect you, to balance you out, to bring up your spirits when your upset, to help you cooperate with all others if needed. But if you wish to call all of that flushed than yes I feel flushed for you too Kankri.” You said calmly. You gave him a soft peck on the cheek and sat back in your chair.

Your surprised you were able to keep so calm in admitting that to him. You were a blushing mess but somehow kept you composure. Kankri reached across the table and held your hand, you both smiled.

“I l9ve y9u ____.” Hearing that made you smile, you almost cried of joy.

“I love you too Kankri.” You replied making him smile.

How you two looked right now would make a rather cute card.
